NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION AMERICAN POLITICS WORKSHOP
June 4, 2025 | 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
McCourt School of Public Policy, Georgetown University
125 E Street NW, Washington, DC 20001
Room 620

PROGRAM
Beginning at 10 a.m., refreshments (light snacks, coffee, etc.) will be available. We will start the workshop promptly at 10:30 a.m.

In order to maximize discussion, authors will not give presentations. Instead, they may offer brief introductory comments, and then we will open the floor to questions. Participants are expected to have read the papers so that virtually all of the time can be devoted to Q&A. Links to the papers are below.

10:30 a.m. - Danny Hayes (GW) and Jennifer Lawless (UVA): "All Ambition is Local: News Consumption and the Decision to Run for Office"

11:30 a.m. - Jasmine Smith (GW): "Trade-Offs Between Electability and Representation" (Chapter 5 of the book manuscript "Electability Politics: How Black Americans Vote in Primary Elections")

12:30 p.m. - Lunch

1:30 p.m. - David Karol (Maryland), Justin Gross (UMass), and Alexander Theodoridis (UMass): "Parties’ and Members of Congress’ Group Ties as MCs See Them"

DIRECTIONS, TRANSPORTATION, AND CHECK-IN
The meeting will be held at the McCourt School building at 125 E Street NW, near Capitol Hill. (Note that this is NOT Georgetown's main campus -- if you go there, you'll be lonely.) The building is a short walk from Union Station.

Public transportation is recommended, as 125 E Street NW does not have visitor parking. For drivers, there are several public parking garages nearby: 99 H Street NW; 601 New Jersey Ave NW (across from McDonough Hall); and 200 Massachusetts Ave NW (Capitol Crossing).

When you arrive, you must check in at the lobby of the 125 E Street NW entrance. (Do not use the smaller entrance from the law school quad.) There should be staff to direct you to Room 620.
